In issue 3/2017, we publish 12 articles in the Epidemiological Chronicle section, containing general summary on infectious diseases occurring in Poland in 2015 and others more specified, including  those about vaccine-preventable diseases and hepatitis A, B, C, HIV / AIDS and also on tuberculosis.

In the section Infection problems, we recommend an article about hepatocellular carcinoma - the authors discuss, on the basis of their own research on patients from north-eastern Poland, the occurrence and clinical features of HCC, coexistence of this type of cancer with cirrhosis, HCV / HBV infections and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The article also evaluated the usefulness of alpha-fetoprotein in the diagnosis and monitoring of HCC  treatment.

In the same section, Authors from the dentistry and microbiology departments present the etiology, pathogenesis and epidemiology of periapical abscesses - the main cause of tooth loss around the world. Periapical abscesses are most often caused by anaerobic and relatively anaerobic bacteria. The identification of the etiological factor is difficult and frequently  requires the use of molecular methods.

In the section Public Health reader will find, among others article on the knowledge and awareness of patients regarding cutaneous melanoma. Based on the questionnaire study, the awareness of skin cancer prevention, awareness of risk factors for cutaneous melanoma and health behaviors as well as sources of this knowledge were studied.
